The book is undated, but was published in 1944, and the dedication on the inside front cover gives the date as Easter 1945.

Rene Cloke was an illustrator for books, postcards and greeting cards. As well as Alice, she illustrated several of Enid Blyton’s books and The Wind in the Willows. She is also the author of several books including Woodland Stories and Before We Go to Bed. She died in 1995.
I wish I were more of a font geek: I love the style of writing on the cover, but don’t know what it’s called. Seems very 1930s/40s to me.
I think mum bought me this one.
