Pamela’s Dream History Of England by Rachel T. Byng.
Illustrations by E. Maude-Roxby.
Published by Mills & Boon, 1923. First edition hardback, no dustjacket.
Pamela becomes sleepy whilst studying her history books, and finds herself learning from the historical figures themselves. The book is written in a very Alice-y style, and there are parodies of some of the poems from the original:
“Will you skip a little faster,” said a puppy to a maid,
“There’s some history behind me which they from my tail have made,
See how eagerly King Arthur and his gorgeous Knights advance,
They are waiting till you reach them. You need not look askance.
Will you, won’t you, will you, won’t you
Will you please keep skipping?
Will you, won’t you, will you, won’t you,
My word you’ll get a whipping.”
and…..
How doth the aged Druid Priest
Adore the mistletoe,
With chant and celebrating Feast
In accents deep and low.
In the end, Pamela wakes up and passes her history exam with honours…
