More Alice

More Alice, by Yates Wilson.

Illustrated by the author.

Published by T.V. Boardman & Co, 1959. Hardback with dust jacket.

A follow-up to the Alice stories in response to a request from the author’s daughter, and according to the jacket:

“written unashamedly in the style of Lewis Carroll and illustrated with John Tenniel’s illustrations in mind.”

I love the chameleon on the dust jacket, and the black and white internal pictures are also charming. The only thing I can find out about Yates Wilson is that he also produced public information posters in world war two. Any other information welcome!

Bought for £15 on abebooks.

Available on amazon: More’Alice,’

Seeing the cover reproduced here makes me so nostalgic for this book. I’m so sorry I didn’t keep my copy!
I would like to have the words for the poem which starts:

The waving poplars cause the breeze,
The offspring of the dog are fleas….

The waving poplars cause the breeze,
And day is shining on the sun.
The offspring from the dog are fleas,
The cross is there before the bun.

“Only if it’s a hot cross bun”, whispered Simple Simon. “It’s different if it’s a Bath bun.”

I’m not sure it’s information as such, but I know that Yates-Wilson is a distant relative of mine (cousin 3 times removed). I only found out today, which is a weird coincidence as I’m giving a presentation tomorrow morning on a play I have written, based on the characters from Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland.

    Curiouser and curiouser, said Alice…

I’m eager to read this now, and I’m getting hold of a copy at the end of the week. Can’t wait!

Yates Wilson was my uncle Bill. He lived in South Africa with his wife and 3 daughters. He was an illustrator of John Bull magazine covers in the 40s, often using his mother and sisters as models. He worked in advertising in Cape Town in the 50s and 60s.
