Alice’s Adventures: Lewis Carroll in Popular Culture

Alice’s Adventures: Lewis Carroll in Popular Culture by William Brooker.

Published by Continuum International Publishing Group Ltd. 2005.

Paperback.

ISBN: 082641754X

From the publisher:

Will Brooker, author of “Batman Unmasked” and “Using the Force”, turns his attention to Lewis Carroll and Alice. He takes the reader through a fascinating and revealing tour of late 20th Century popular culture, following Alice and her creator wherever they go. Brooker reveals the ways in which this iconic character has been used and adapted, taking in cartoons, movies, computer games, theme parks, heritage sites, novelisations, illustrations, biographies, theatrical performances, toys and other products, websites, fan clubs and much more. The result is a remarkable analysis of how one original creation has expanded over time to symbolize many different things to many different people.

A fascinating read, with chapters on different illustrators, “Dark Wonderland”, adaptations and further adventures.

Alice’s Adventures Underground

Alice’s Adventures Underground by Lewis Carroll

Illustrations by the author.

Published by Pavillion, 1985.

ISBN: 0907516947

Facsimile edition of Dodgson’s manuscript hand written and illustrated for Alice Liddell and her sisters.

I have two copies of this: one was given to me for my 21st birthday and the other was my father’s. It has his book-plate on the inside of the cover, and so is unbearably precious.

You can read the book and see Dodgson’s pictures on the British Library site.

Alice in Korean

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Original story, Tenniel’s illustrations.

I have no idea who published this, or what year, or anything else, as I can’t read it… I think it’s Korean, but I may even be wrong about that…

ISBN: 8972592315

Hardback. That I do know. And no dustjacket.

Bought for me by my ex-husband’s brother when he was out in Korea, hence my rather strong suspicion that it’s in that language ;)
